This talk (web) aims at presenting the Business Model Canvas for designing, assessing and challenging business models. Design thinking attitude will also be emphasized for exploring and prototyping business models. Finally, the synergy between the business model canvas, lean startup and customer development will be briefly presented for testing business models. The Business Model Canvas has also been used to help social enterprises achieve positive social or environmental impact as well as financial success. Business model innovation and industry changes will be illustrated with examples such as Nespresso, Eight19 and Peepoople.

Strategic Innovation Lab (sLab) is a centre for research and development in design, innovation and strategic foresight at OCAD University [...] one group has chosen to explore sustainability from the perspective of business models. Earlier this year the multi-disciplinary Strongly Sustainable Business Model Group (SSBMG) was founded with the objective of providing a focal point for collaboration in applied research on this topic. Meeting with Prof. Greg Van Alstyne (web), director of sLab, Antony Upward, initiator of the Strongly Sustainable Business Model Ontology & Canvas (web), and Bob WIllard, speaker and author of the book The New Sustainability Advantage (web).

This talk aims at presenting the Business Model Canvas for designing, assessing and challenging business models. Business model innovation and industry changes will be illustrated with examples such as airBnB, Grameen Phone and SunEdisson. Design thinking attitude and customer centricity will also be emphasised for exploring, prototyping and testing business models. Furthermore, business model mechanics, economics and layering will be shortly presented and illustrated.

Les objectifs de ce mini-atelier sont de (a) découvrir un langage visuel pour décrire, remettre en question et esquisser des Business Models, (b) mieux comprendre certains exemples marquants d’innovation par les business models, tels que Nespresso, SunEdison, Cirque du Soleil et d’autres, (c) explorer le paradigme “Managing as designing” et caractériser le “design thinking”.

Deux entreprises romandes seront utilisées comme illustration: Menegalli (web) et Duvoisin-Groux (web).

workshop on business models at TU Vienna, invited by Prof. Hannes Werthner, Director Vienna PhD School of Informatics, and Birgit Hofreiter, head of the Informatics Innovation Center (i²c)

The workshop aims at (a) learning about and applying a practical visual language to describe, challenge, and design business models, (b) appreciating powerful examples of business model innovation, ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies and social entrepreneurship ventures, and (c) exploring and prototyping business models using design thinking and customer development to boost future growth. The day will be a mix between presentation, q&a, buzz groups, and hands on practice.
